The J-QUANT Nitrate test strip
semi-quantitatively measures the nitrate content of aqueous solutions up to 500
mg/L (ppm).
Nitrate can be present in water through the biological breakdown of plant and
animal matter, a key part of the nitrogen cycle. High concentrations of nitrate
can also be found when nitrate-based fertilisers are used in farming.
To aquatic life, nitrate is much
less toxic than ammonia, but still toxic nonetheless. However, the main concern
with elevated levels of nitrate, is that it can easily be converted to nitrite,
which even at levels of 0.5 mg/L (0.5ppm) can be toxic to aquatic life.
